Spruiell Douglas White

Spruiell D. White retired from the MacArthur Foundation as a Senior Program Officer in the U.S.
Program in 2011 after fifteen years of service. Prior to his Foundation appointment, he served
in a number of executive leadership positions at the Chicago Jobs Council, the Illinois Area
United Negro College Fund and Urban League affiliates in San Francisco and Seattle.
He serves as a board advisor/member to Leave No Veterans Behind, the Illinois Ethnic
Coalition, Diasporal Rhythms and the African American Leadership and Policy Institute. White
also served as a Mayoral appointee to the Chicago Private Industry Council, the Empowerment
Zone Coordinating Council and Visiting Scholar to the School of Social Service Administration
at the University of Chicago. He is a lifetime member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the
NAACP.

White received his undergraduate degree in English from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa
(1967) and his Master’s of Arts in Social Service Administration from the University of Chicago
(2001).
